Hyde Park Playground, North Perth

Hyde Park in North Perth is one of those rare inner‑city spots where you can easily spend a whole day without the kids getting bored. Set on the corner of Vincent and Throssell Streets, just a few kilometres from the CBD, this leafy heritage park wraps a beautiful lake, shady lawns, multiple Playgrounds and a popular water Playground into one very family‑friendly package.

The main Playground, near the corner of Vincent and Throssell Streets, has a fantastic castle‑themed structure that immediately draws kids in. Little knights and princesses can climb up via ramps, stairs and platforms before choosing from curly slides and shorter, gentler slides that suit toddlers and preschoolers.

Around the “castle” you’ll find plenty to challenge more confident climbers, including rope nets, a small rock‑climbing wall and other structures that encourage kids to scramble, balance and test themselves.

The ramp access makes it easier for a wider range of kids and carers to get right into the heart of the play structure, and there are play panels and a communication board to support more inclusive, social and sensory play.

There’s a big sandpit with colourful stepping stones that are perfect for imaginative games and digging.

Alongside the sand play you’ll find a woodchip area with a spinner where children can sit inside and whirl around together.

Nearby, there are two sets of swings, including toddler swings and a Liberty Swing for children who use a wheelchair. Beside the toddler swing there is also an inclusive swing with a wider seat and front grip, which offers extra support and security for children who need it.

On warm days, the Hyde Park Water Playground is the big drawcard. Located beside Vincent Street on the Throssell Street corner, this free, zero‑depth splash pad is shaded by mature trees and shade sails and is perfect for younger children who aren’t ready for deep water. Kids can dart between sprays, water cannons and tipping buckets, and they’ll love pressing the big activation button when the water stops. The water Playground usually runs in the warmer months from November to late March between 8am and 8pm, so it’s a good idea to check current details before you promise a water play session, as dates can occasionally change from season to season. Dogs are welcome in Hyde Park generally, but they are not permitted in the water Playground area, which helps keep it cleaner and more comfortable for families.

The whole park is wrapped around a central lake that’s split into two basins with small islands, home to breeding birds. A sealed path loops around the water, making it ideal for a pram walk, kids on scooters or bikes, or just a leisurely stroll while you push a sleeping baby. Along the way you can spot ducks and other birdlife, pause on benches to enjoy the view, and find plenty of grassy nooks under the jacarandas and huge fig trees for a picnic or a game of chasey. The mature tree canopy means there’s lots of natural shade, and the mix of open lawn and tucked‑away spots makes it just as suitable for big gatherings as it is for a quiet midweek play.

Facilities are a big part of what makes Hyde Park so easy with kids. The Meeting Place kiosk and toilets are located right beside the Playground, which is especially handy with little ones who need frequent snack and toilet breaks.

There are multiple barbecues dotted near the Playgrounds, picnic tables and a couple of gazebos that can be booked for events via the City of Vincent’s Spacetoco booking system, plus a stage area that’s used for community events. Drinking fountains and toilets (including accessible cubicles and change tables) are located convenient to both the Playgrounds and water play. Many families also like to grab coffee and treats from nearby Chu Bakery on William Street to enjoy back in the park.

Being so close to the city, Hyde Park is well‑serviced by public transport. Bus routes 60, 950, 960 and 990 all pass nearby, and it’s about a 20‑minute walk from Perth train station, making it a good option if you don’t want to battle for a car bay. If you do drive, there is free three‑hour parking on the streets surrounding the park, though it can be very busy on warm weekends and during the peak of water‑play season, so arriving early or considering public transport is wise.

Hyde Park works just as well for a quick Playground visit as it does for a whole day out. You can let the kids burn off energy on the castle Playground and swings, explore the accessible equipment and communication board, wander or scoot around the lake spotting birds, cool off in the seasonal water Playground, then finish with a barbecue or picnic under the trees. With its combination of traditional and inclusive play equipment, shady lawns, heritage charm and city‑fringe location, it’s no surprise this has long been one of Perth’s favourite family parks.
