Great news – a new Waldecks Garden Centre has recently opened on Karrinyup Road in Stirling, and they have a fabulous family friendly café, complete with kids play area, hidden away inside!
Driving past and from the humble entrance, you would never guess what delights await you inside.
Wander through the nursery gift shop, and the Blue Lotus Café opens up to you. The inside tables spill out onto a wooden deck overlooking the flowering nursery plants and pots, and a beautiful Koi-filled pond fish complete with lily pads. Contemporary sofas and furntiture is arranged in intimate groups with umbrellas for shade.
The café has a pleasant summer ambiance and its fresh interior is stylish including quirky chalkboard quotes and retro cookie jars and cake stands. Gift ideas and products for sale are cleverly displayed along the back inside wall.
But the best part lies gleaming at the far side of the café outside: the Holy Grail for Parents – an enclosed open-air play area for the kids!
The Play Area is fenced and gated with artificial turf and pretty potted plants along the fence. At the time we visited the area contained a small slide, a wooden cubby house, play tent, play tunnel and various pull along toys as well as one coupé car. There are three chalk boards nailed to the wall with chalk available from staff.
There is also a bench for moms to sit at if they want to watch toddlers more closely. Generally we thought that the area best caters for kids 0-5 years old.
Nearby tables allow you to leave more independent kids inside the Play Area while you watch from a short distance away, but supervision is still the parents’ responsibility.
The only downside is that the Play Area is in full sun with no shade sails, so make sure the kids wear hats and suncream.
Inside the café you will also find a few boxes filled with picture books to entertain the kids if you prefer to keep them at your table. We also found plenty of colouring pencils and paper (cleverly provided on clipboards) for the kids to draw to their heart’s content. There are plenty of magazines for the moms and dads too.
Another drawcard for the kids is the lovely pond containing a scattering of Koi fish as well as pretty Lotuses and water lilies. The pond is fenced but it is a wire fence that has gaps big enough for curious toddlers to climb through – so you will need to watch under 2’s closely.
The café has a breakfast menu and a lunch menu. They serve a variety of coffees and teas of all descriptions, as well as the popular Devonshire Tea. For lunch there is a specials menu of yummy tempting sandwiches and salads prepared fresh in the kitchen.
Fresh cakes, pastries and biscuits are displayed at the counter to make your mouth water – Gluten Free options are available. We only sampled a coffee this time while the kids played (for Mom’s sanity), but I know for sure we will be back to have a proper brekky or lunch soon.
We visited on a Thursday and it was peaceful but with a steady flow of customers coming and going… so we can imagine that it may be a busy and popular spot on the weekends. The Blue Lotus Café is open from 8:30am – 4pm, seven days a week.
