Tucked away on the calm waters of Freshwater Bay in Claremont, Mrs Herbert’s Park is a gorgeous, pirate-themed Playground that feels like a true hidden gem. Set alongside the historic Claremont Museum (which was originally Mrs Herbert’s school), this riverside spot is perfect for families looking for a mix of adventure play, nature, and a relaxing picnic by the water.

The sand-based Playground is centred around an impressive pirate ship that immediately captures kids’ imaginations. The ship is packed with different climbing elements, including rope nets, steps and a slide, offering plenty of opportunities for children to scramble, balance and explore.

Little pirates can begin their adventure by climbing up onto the deck via the stairs or the climbing net, then make their way across bridges and platforms.

Some of the bridges can be a bit tricky for smaller children, but the structure is designed so adults can easily hop up to lend a helping hand when needed.

On the ship itself you’ll find play panels such as tic-tac-toe and a corner store, great for encouraging quieter moments of play and interaction between siblings or friends.

For even more pretend-play, there’s an adorable beach café set up nearby, where kids can “take orders” and serve up imaginary treats.

Just behind the café is a sand-play table with another play panel and a small climbing net, ideal for toddlers and younger children who prefer to stay closer to the ground while still joining in the fun.

Younger kids are also well catered for with a dolphin rocker to “set sail” on and a swing set that includes a toddler seat, making the Playground suitable for a range of ages.

One of the standout features is the rope climbing lookout tower. Confident climbers can scale the rope net up to the tower platform and enjoy a fantastic view across the river – perfect for surveying the “high seas” like a real pirate keeping watch.

The Playground is set within a beautiful, grassy park that slopes gently down towards the river. Mature trees provide natural shade over parts of the area, and the expansive lawn is ideal for picnics, ball games or just spreading out a blanket while the kids play. There are BBQ facilities and seating located close to the Playground, making it easy to turn a simple visit into a relaxed family meal.

Near here you’ll also find Mrs Herbert’s seat, where you can sit and admire the surrounding public artworks and peaceful river outlook.

While there are shady trees, there are no formal undercover structures, so it’s important to bring hats, sunscreen and water, especially on warmer days. The riverside setting is a big part of the park’s charm, so families should also keep a close eye on little ones who like to wander.

Accessibility has been considered, with paths that wind down the slope from the top of the park to the Playground, making it easier for prams and those with mobility needs to reach the play area. Parking is available at the top of the park, where you’ll also find accessible toilets equipped with a baby change table.

Mrs Herbert’s Park forms part of the Karda Bidi, one of the Whadjuk Trails, so it’s a lovely stop-off or play break for families exploring the walking trail. Combined with a visit to the neighbouring Claremont Museum or a riverside stroll, this charming pirate-themed Playground makes for a fantastic family outing.
