Gunfire Breakfast Perth CBD

Thursday, 25 April, 7am to 9am
Government House Gardens, St Georges Terrace, Perth

Supported by Rotary WA, the Gunfire Breakfast at Government House Gardens is open to all. Bacon and egg rolls with tea and coffee will be served.

Many communities follow the dawn service with a ‘traditional’ gunfire breakfast. ‘Gunfire’ is a British tradition and was:

… the usual term for the early cup of tea served out to troops in the morning before going on first parade, whenever possible. In the War [WWI] recruits in training always had ‘Gun Fire’ supplied to them, the work before breakfast being found particularly trying. The morning gun in a garrison town suggested the name probably.

(E Fraser and J Gibbons, Soldier & Sailor Words & Phrases, Routledge, London, 1925, p. 113)

The ‘gunfire breakfast’ seems to have evolved from the above, and comprises whatever is available at the time—it could be ‘coffee and rum’ or ‘stew, sausage and bread’, or even ‘bacon and eggs’ (which is served by the War Memorial for their ‘gunfire breakfast’ on Anzac Day).

‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ Anzac Day Screening

Thursday, 25 April, 4pm to 5.30pm
Luna Palace Cinema, 155 Oxford St, Leederville

On ANZAC Day, a national day of remembrance that marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, Luna Leederville is pleased to present an encore screening of THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD.

Academy Award®-winner Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) presents an extraordinary work, revealing the Great War as you have never seen it.

Employing state-of-the-art technology to transform audio and moving image archive footage more than a century old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there. Driven by a personal interest in the conflict, Jackson set out to explore the day-to-day experience of its combatants. Immersed for months in the BBC and Imperial War Museum archives, Jackson created narratives and strategies regarding how this story should be told. Using only the voices of those involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line: their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate, rested and formed friendships in those moments between battles; as well as their hopes and dreams for the future.

Each frame of the film has been hand-colourised by Jackson’s team, the footage 3D-digitised, transformed with modern post-production techniques, enabling these soldiers to walk and talk among us. Reaching into the mists of time, Jackson has aimed to give these men voices, investigate the hopes and fears of these veterans that survived and were able to tell their stories, and detail the humility and humanity of those who represented a generation forever changed by the destruction of a global war.

Suitable only for 15 years and over.
