Down a windy back road and through a leafy green nursery you will find Bolt Coffee Roasters!
Nestled at the back of the Men of the Trees St Barbe Grove Nursery (more on them later) you will find a really good cup of coffee that is roasted on site (last time I spoke to the owner/barista it was literally roasted in a converted BBQ!).
It opened a couple of years ago, initially as a drive through espresso bar and was literally THE BEST COFFEE I could get within a 5km radius of my house. With a baby who loved to sleep in the car (and not in her cot!) I spent a lot of time driving around in my beloved automobile and getting a good drive through coffee was a great way to start my day.
Steve is the man behind Bolt. And as he got busier I guess it didn’t make sense to only serve drive through coffee and he slowly started expanding his quirky little outdoor space.
He went from having an old shed with standing room only, to setting up a mish-mash of tables and chairs under the trees (complete with toybox!), an outdoor stage for local musicians and an undercover dome where you can take cover with a cup of Bolt if it’s raining.
I believe Alacrity Foods supply all the food and the variety of goodies on offer changes daily. You’ll usually find sweet and savoury options – a chocolate marmalade or lemon drizzle cake, scones, biscuits, bagels, savoury muffins and gluten free options.
There’s plenty of parking on site and live music most Saturday mornings.
Open Mondays 8am – 2pm and Wednesday through Saturday 8am – 2pm, Bolt is a great place to have a coffee under the trees and let the kids run wild. There’s loads of space, a toybox full of toys (my daughter always seems to find something new to play with whenever we stop by) and most importantly – good coffee!
No decaf if that’s your thing but he will serve you a cup of tea and I do love an ice coffee on a hot summers day.
Look out for the vintage rocking horse which was a hit with the kids last time I was there.
Reusable coffee cups are encouraged.
Toilets are inside the nursery so leave a few minutes to find it, especially if you’ve got a newly toilet trained toddler on your hands!
Hot tip – if you go after it’s been raining make sure you take gumboots for the kids, I won’t be making that mistake again!
Men of the Trees is a not for profit organisation bringing people together to plant and grow trees! According to their website they’ve been active in WA since 1979 (+2000 members and volunteers) and they collectively grow and plant more than half a million trees in a season – impressive or what?! They sell seedlings to the general public on certain days and they do a great annual festival. ‘Festival of the Trees’ is held around September each year and it’s a great local event if you’re looking for something different to do with the kids. It’s free entry (gold coin donation for parking) and Fat Cat made an appearance last year!
