Free – Introduction to Permaculture – Ballajura

Saturday, 7 March, 10.30am to 2pm
Ballajura Public Library, Kingfisher Avenue &, Illawarra Crescent North, Ballajura

Are you new to gardening, do you grow your vegetables or have you been gardening for decades? Have you heard about permaculture?

Permaculture design was created in Australia (Tasmania, actually) over 40 years ago and is a design process drawing from nature to provide a practical, energy efficient and close to self-sufficient landscape. It is closed loop, holistic and much more than growing food.

This introductory workshop, presented by permaculturalist and educator Fiona Blackham brings it back to basics of permaculture design (not gardening!). You will take home a head full of ideas and skills on how to look through ‘permaculture design goggles’.

This workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over.

Register online here.

Parenting Right From the Start with Dr Vanessa Lapointe

Saturday, 7 March, 10am to 12pm
Bendat Parents and Community Centre, 36 Dodd Street, Wembley

Canadian psychologist and author of ‘Discipline Without Damage’, Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, is back in Australia by popular demand. She is joining us to launch her new book ‘Parenting Right From the Start’ with a series of seminars based on the book.

Babies don’t come with a manual. And yet, the science of child development has revealed that what happens in the precious first years of a child’s life really matters. It is incredibly important to parent right from the start. Dr. Vanessa Lapointe has spent 20 years as a psychologist and researcher as well as being a good-enough, imperfect mamma. In this seminar, she brings together all of that work with lots of practical things to explore a clear path for mums and dads, and all the other “big people” who care for our little ones as together you take on the magnificent task of growing a unique human.

About Dr Vanessa…
Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is a registered psychologist, parenting educator, best-selling author, international speaker, and a mum. As the founder and director of The Wishing Star Lapointe Developmental Clinic, she has been supporting families and children for almost 20 years. While navigating the journey of parenting her own two children, including the restructuring of her family through divorce, Dr. Vanessa has been challenged to grow herself up. Rather than hiding behind a glossy façade, she acknowledges how much she is right in the muck of it – just like everyone else. From this place of humility and compassion, Dr Vanessa journeys along on a path that lands for herself and her family, all of which has profoundly changed her life and has made a significant influence on her speaking and her practice.

Date: Saturday, 7th March
Venue: Bendat Parent and Community Centre
Address: 36 Dodd St, Wembley WA 6014
Time: 10am-noon (doors open at 9.15am)
Tickets: $35
Introduction by Maggie Dent

Bushfire Fundraiser: Family Painting Class

Sunday, 8 March, 10.30am to 12pm
Stackwood, 10 Stack Street, Fremantle

The start of 2020 has been devastating to many around the country, and here at Cabernet & Canvas we’ve been feeling the need to find a way help out with the bushfire relief. We’ve been particularly stricken by the plight of animals and their loss of habitat. This new painting, Koala Love, is a tribute to all animals that have been affected by the fires, and 100% of ticket sales from this class will be going to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park GoFundMe campaign. They are busy treating sick and injured koalas and other wildlife after the devastating Kangaroo Island bushfires.

Huge thanks must also go to the team at Stackwood in Fremantle for donating their space to bushfire fundraising efforts.

This class is a family fundraising event designed for adults and children to paint together for a good cause. This class is recommended for children 8 years old and above, and is not a drop and leave event, but rather an opportunity for families to spend some quality time together. No more than three children per participating adult.

Adults are welcome to attend without children, but please be aware that this class will be painting on canvases slightly smaller than our regular size.

Tickets are $45 per adult and $30 per child, with a maximum of 3 children per participating adult. The class will be 1.5 hours long.

This is a BYO nibbles event – no food or drinks will be available for purchase from the venue, so please bring anything you may want to class with you.

Join Noongar cultural guide Marissa Verma and horticulturalist Mark Tucek to learn all about Australian Bush Tucker at a special event at the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre.

Marissa and Mark will be discussing the native Australian edible plants that can thrive in your garden, and some of the culture and history behind them. Bush tucker tastings will be included! A selection of bush tucker plants will also be available for purchasing.

This fun family event will also include a variety of hands-on nature craft and science activities for the kids. There will also be guided nature walks on the boardwalk around Herdsman Lake.
