Knee Deep Margaret River winery received a 5 STAR Winery rating from James Halliday in the 2014 & 2012 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion.
While we were staying in Dunsborough this July school holidays, we thought it would be nice to try somewhere different and as Knee Deep was in the Entertainment Book and a 20 minute drive down Caves Road we thought we would give it a try. The Cellar door is at one end of the restaurant so you can also try some wine before lunch if you wish.
The restaurant is lovely and light and overlooks the vineyards and grassed lawn at the front of the restaurant. There is also a large covered deck area but we chose to sit inside as being July, it was quite cold. There were quite a few reservations even though we went on a weekday lunch.
They have a special kids menu which doubles as a colouring sheet. Our children chose the fish and chips each with a pop top and ice cream for dessert. The fish and chips were really nice and were presented on a wooden board which looked cool but unfortunately as the fish was in rounded goujons, they did roll off the board from time to time.
We chose to splash out and have the ‘trust the chef’ 3 course menu ($70 each) and as I was not the driver, I also had the matching wines. We really enjoyed our lunch and due to all the components and techniques used in the kitchen, these were not things we would have cooked at home which was a nice change.
Our starter was the slow cooked egg, smoked pork hock, cauliflower, gruyere and black truffle.
Our main course was braised beef cheek, kohl rabi, field mushrooms, bresola, charred cabbage and puffed sorghum. The picture does not really do it justice as it was delicious.
For dessert we had smashed apples, rhubarb, pecan streusel, fennel malto and malted ice cream.
The restaurant is quite pricey (a lot of effort obviously goes into their food) and a bit ‘Masterchef’ but we really liked it and they do cater rather well for children.
As well as the children’s menu they give each child a ‘Busy Nippers’ bag for free which contains stickers, crayons, colouring in, etc. They also have a large grass lawn at the front of the restaurant where there are some bench seat tables and a large box with a childrens’ cricket set and a frisbee so there is plenty of space for them to run around and let off steam. You would be able to see the lawn from most of the restaurant so you can sit back and relax inside while the children play outside.
Knee Deep is number A75 in the current entertainment book so the Gold Card gets you 25% off the total bill, up to a maximum of $40. With the discount, our total bill came to $181. It was great for a special occasion or you could eat there for a lot less if you all just had main courses and did not buy much to drink.
We enjoyed our visit and would certainly go there again.
