We have eaten at Matilda Bay a few times and it is a really lovely restaurant. We tend to go if we want to celebrate a birthday or special occasions. They do quite a reasonable lunch menu and often have some good specials.
TheMatilda Bay restaurant is in a fantastic location, right on the Swan River, across the road from UWA. It is a favourite venue for weddings and functions as they have a number of different sized rooms/areas and function packages.
On this visit we went to celebrate my birthday and as we had the day off work we went for lunch. For a ‘fine dining’ restaurant, it is quite good for children. They have a great children’s’ menu and also give out a free Busy Nippers bag to children dining at the restaurant. They also sometimes have outdoor games, such as croquet, available. There is plenty of space for the kids to run around outside on the grass before or after dinner.
The children’s menu at Matilda Bay comes on a colouring sheet and is a set 2 course menu including a drink. Both our children chose the fish and chips which were very good. They also came with a really lovely salad. However, it was dressed in balsamic vinegar and olive oil so if your children are not keen on dressing you might want to ask them to leave it plain. We also chose juice instead of a soft drink. For dessert they opted for the ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce. The ice cream was really lovely and is made on the premises. We ordered some extras on top of our set menu for starters.
My husband had the pork belly to start and I had the fried tiger prawns and barramundi and prawn wantons. Both were really good.
For our main course, my husband had the hot smoked salmon ravioli and I had the lamb cutlets. Both were very good but we particularly liked the ravioli. We also had steamed mixed green vegetables on the side.
I was quite full after my lunch at Matilda Bay but as it was my birthday, I could not resist dessert! I had the double baked white chocolate soufflé with violet infused ice-cream. The ice-cream was amazing and is quite possibly the best ice-cream I have ever had.
As it was my birthday, they also gave me a complimentary cake with Happy Birthday written on the plate. The cake was just beautiful and I liked it even more than my soufflé!
We tend to save Matilda Bay for when we have guests over or a birthday to celebrate as then we have an excuse to indulge in all the lovely things on the menu. We would certainly recommend Matilda Bay. We have eaten there a few times and will certainly be back in the near future.
Notes: Matilda Bay is in the Entertainment Book so it is definitely worth bringing along your Gold Card. However, it can’t be used with specials such as the set lunch menu.
For anyone planning a wedding or a function at Matilda Bay, the restaurant runs a Wedding open day every year in September where you can try out different food and look around the function rooms which have been set up as they would for an event. There are also a number of wedding suppliers who set up stands in the upstairs function room. See the Matilda Bay Facebook page for photos of this year’s open day https://www.facebook.com/
