Messy ToTs WA provides children aged 6 months (must be able to sit unaided) to 5 years a range of sensory and messy play activities. Sessions are held each Tuesday at the Meerilinga Children and Family Centre Kingsley and Thursday at the Joondalup Family Centre.
All sessions are run by owner Louise, who encourages the children to explore and learn at their own pace. Sessions are aimed to help children development fine motor skills, sensory development, hand eye coordination, social skills, and stimulate their imagination.
A different theme and range of activities is setup each week. All materials used are edible and non toxic.
On the day we visited the theme was dinosaurs, located around the room was seven different activities for the children to explore. The activities included; straw with frozen dinosaur fossils, green sand, water based paint, oats with jelly gunk, cornflakes with slime, playdough and warm bubbly water.
There were sheets, towels and foam mats laid out around the more slippery activities to avoid any accidents. Kids music playing in the background added to the fun atmosphere.
Having never done anything like this before my 10-month-old was a little reserved and shy to begin with but… WOW! What a mess he created! By the end of the hour long session, he was wet, ate some paint and had a bit of everything sticking to his nappy!
BUT not to worry! Warm soapy water is provided to clean off at the end. The room was a messy disaster, but Louise took care of all the cleaning!
You should bring along old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (some little ones were just wearing a nappy), towel, wet wipes and a change of clothes. My little boy loved jumping in the bubbly water, if you have a water baby a swimming nappy might be a good idea. Mum/Dad be warned, you are likely to get a little messy too!
We visited the Kingsley venue, there was plenty of parking available and heaps of room if you need to bring a pram or stroller along. The room is secure so none of the little ones can escape.
Bookings are essential and can be made through the website, there are 5 or 10-week options available, or a trial class. www.messytots.com.au
