“Healthy, wholesome food made from real food. Raw, vegan, vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free options available every day.”
If you happen to be heading down south be sure to pop into The Rusty Nut Cafe located on South Western Highway in Serpentine (look for the Mobil Pegasus sign).
Run by delightful owners Caroline and Paul who have taken a historic icon and turned it into a funky little coffee house next to the original attached workshop. For anyone interested in turn of the century automobiles and a bit of history on the actual shop and area, be sure to knock on Paul’s door and check out his collection of photos and mechanical memorabilia.
This was a great find especially for the gluten intolerant amongst us. For the coffee snobs or just lovers of dark liquid gold that doesn’t taste like burnt mud, prepared to be impressed. Caroline sources her delightful coffee from “Black Matter Roasters” based in Osborne Park and as her sign out front says – it really is “The Best Coffee” around.
For a family who frequently travels down south we have struggled at times to find good, fast coffee and decent gluten free options that are not only flavourful and nutritious but don’t bleed us dry. I was once told if I wanted almond milk in my coffee it was $7 extra!!! The Rusty Nut served almond milk in a huge glass and I didn’t need to sell my first born to purchase it. Caroline even gave me extra in a jug because she thought it looked too strong – free of charge!
We were really happy with the food we ordered in taste, presentation and cost. Gluten free is often marked up but the prices were reasonable and because they were jam packed full of great ingredients and freshly made, we were left satisfied. There was no “I’m still hungry” cries from the back seat for the next fifty kilometres as there usually is when we stop off for a roadhouse runner. Even a few frequent truck drivers have converted to some GF treats for the long hauls!
We had arrived when they were due to close, but Caroline was welcoming and happy to serve and show us around. She even came outside and told us not to hurry off and we could stay for as long as we liked, which was handy as my daughter was very engrossed in her “work’ in the cubby house!
The Rusty Nut is a great pit stop and very child-friendly. A perfect spot for families to recharge in the lovely long, narrow courtyard with ample seating under the shade. The kids can have a play on the outdoor equipment and there are blocks, tea sets and other toys inside the cubby house as well as some very friendly chickens to keep them amused.
